it's an archos jukebox studio 10, a 10gb harddrive-based mp3 player from ~2001. i noticed immediately that the firmware was pretty crummy (changing the volume requires digging into a menu, and you scroll through vertical menus with the right/left buttons). i'm going to quote wikipedia for a second:

i've used rockbox on my ipods and my sansa clip in the past, and my roommate dana has been busy porting rockbox to his modern mp3 player for the last few weeks, and i had no idea the archos jukebox was notable in rockbox's origin story. i really just bought it because it's hideous! i paid like 30 dollars lol

it fully works and runs on (rechargeable) AAs so there's no battery degradation to worry about. it's a standard 2.5" ide hard drive inside so i could flashmod it easily, but it's got an intact warranty seal sticker over one of the screws which tickles me. i'm gonna wait until it actually craps out. and when that day comes, apparently it runs rockbox
